Experiencing this type of photography is truly magical. It’s a passage into the past that brings us into the present, offering a space to pause and contemplate.
Workshop details
Day 1: The journey begins with a brief historic introduction to the birth of photography. You’ll learn about the alchemical process that gave rise to the first photographic images, setting the stage for the hands-on experience that awaits.
Starting with the preparation of your glass plate, you’ll sensitize it with silver nitrate. Then you’ll step behind the large format camera and capture your first image. You’ll then personally develop and fix the plate by hand, watching as the image emerges from the depths of the emulsion. The process is instant, and within 20 minutes, you’ll witness your image come to life.
Day 2: On the second day, you’ll refine your technique and gain confidence in the process. You’ll experiment with different exposures and practice your developing skills. You will also varnish your plates over a flame, bringing your images to completion.
By the end of the workshop, you will have not only mastered the technical steps of wet plate photography but also experienced the true magic of the medium. There’s something deeply enchanting about watching your image come to life in real time, as though the moment itself is being captured by a force older than time.
The process invites you to slow down, savour each step, and feel a deep connection to the art of photography.
You’ll leave with your own unique plates and the memory of having
created something truly magical.
