Set within the forests and mountains of the Serra de Sintra, amidst a former citrus grove, our powder pink studio peeks out from the cork oaks and chestnut trees, offering verdant views whilst providing an inspiring backdrop for creativity and reflection.

Our residency welcomes individual artists who demonstrate independent proficiency in printmaking.

At Atelier Citrina, we have created a restorative, nature-based environment that is as environmentally sustainable as it is artistically nurturing. Recently founded, Atelier Citrina is one of the first community ateliers in Portugal to focus on safer and non-toxic printmaking practices.

Our Residency Program offers artists the opportunity to work in a spacious, beautifully equipped studio. Residents also have access to our graphic arts, photography, printmaking, and artist book library, while becoming integral members of Atelier Citrina's thriving artistic community.

As a programme, we support the aspirations and ideas of each artist. We respect the diverse paths of creativity and tailor experiences to each individual's requirements. Our residencies feature time spent in our printmaking studio—a stimulating yet calm environment where artists can focus solely on their work. Here—if required—artists receive personalised instruction in a range of printmaking methods to help them expand and develop their practice. Whether it's a time for learning and experimentation, refining techniques, or bringing a preconceived project to life, our residencies offer a supportive platform for artists to meaningfully engage with their craft and bring their artistic visions to life.

Artists can apply for a residency as individuals, or as a pair who are willing to share their accommodation.

Residencies are self-funded by the artists and their supporters. Applications are reviewed by the studio directors Mirry Stolzenberg and Philippe Mateus.

Artist residency details

Our Artist Residency offers artists 24/7 access to our printmaking studio, enabling independent use of all the resources available. For more information on our facilities, materials and equipment, please visit the ‘Studio’ section on the homepage.

Artists also benefit from allocated storage space for their work/materials and a designated glass-topped working area with animated emerald views onto the Serra. Technical support is available during scheduled hours, coordinated with the Atelier Citrina team.

Throughout the week, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy working among a community of fellow printmakers. You will have the option to work alongside your hosts and on two designated days, to share the studio with our open-access users.

Where you’ll stay

As a part of this residency, we offer our Woodland Yurt perched high amongst the forest trees above our wildflower meadow. Our yurt is lined with thick sheep’s wool and comes complete with a wood burning stove making it a warm and comfortable environment to cozy-up in at the end of an industrious day printmaking in the Atelier Citrina studio, walking in the Serra or swimming in the wilds of the ocean.

Our yurts’ circular skylight window provides you opportunities to gaze at the stars through leafy branches while you drift into sleep accompanied by the sound of our resident owl.

Cooking in the great outdoors…

Our outdoor kitchen, fully equipped and lovingly upcycled, invites you to cook against the melodical acoustics of chirping of birds while you savour in our forest kitchens’ lush fauna.

With our portable fire pit, you can easily prepare your own flame-grilled or fire-baked culinary delights.

Forest bathing

Enjoy an open-air hot shower or relaxing soak in our forest bathtub while catching the early morning rays or contemplating the night skies. Feel the breeze on your skin and absorb the luminosity of light play through the tropical animated flora making up the bathroom walls around you.
