Summer Printmaking School

An adventure into mono-printing, watercolour drawing and chine-collé inspired by artist Maroco Machiko.

Shimmering Creatures 42 by Miroco Machiko

Course overview
Miroco Machiko is a Japanese artist celebrated for her bold, vibrant and colourful paintings of animals, mythical beasts and fauna. She aims to capture the essence of her subjects through her playful application of exaggerated scale, expressive mark-making and unusual perspectives.

In this five day printmaking course, participants will explore a range of drawing and printmaking techniques inspired by the joyful world of Miroco Machiko. They will focus on creating their own expressive images of mythical beasts and tropical fauna using collage techniques, mono-printing, watercolour, and chine-collé. Through playful exercises and intuitive mark-making, students will be encouraged to experiment with scale, unconventional viewpoints, and texture — developing their confidence in visual storytelling while creating imaginative, layered artworks.

Each day will build on the last as we sail through playful exercises and thoughtful observations, gathering inspiration from the natural world to inform our compositions.

By week’s end, each student will leave with a finished print-based artwork and a collection of sketches,  photomontages, and acquired techniques that trace the story of their creative process. A full week of joyful making, reflective experimentation, and uncharted adventures into the layered possibilities of printmaking.
