6-week lamp-making workshop
Course overview
Not more or less, but less is more.
This lamp making workshop is above all a place of experimentation; a playful laboratory where we’ll be working with humble materials such as recycled cardboard.
Over the six week journey we will progressively transform so-called rubbish into luminous functional sculptures in the form of lamps, using various craft techniques. As participants our interest will lie in doing what we do, with care and joy.
Week one — from 2D to 3D
In the first session, you'll set the stage by learning the essential guidelines and key steps of the creative process. You'll explore form, developing your sense of volume and composition as you cut out templates and assemble recycled pieces—adapting the suggested dimensions to match your personal vision.
You’ll then glue these shapes together to build a three-dimensional object and add balance by crafting cotton bags to be filled with locally sourced beach sand.
Week two — Form follows function
During week two, the focus shifts to functionality. You’ll safely integrate the lamp’s electrical components, ensuring a secure and reliable setup. Afterward, you’ll strengthen and smooth your design with ripped paper strips to add texture and visual interest.
Week three — Reveal the Artist in you
Week three is all about expressing your unique style. Start by customizing the lamp base with your chosen colors through painting. Then, engage in a design dialogue by sketching and planning how the lamp base will interact with the lampshade, creating a harmonious and personalized composition.
Week four — Lino-cut
In this session, we will add a distinctive design to your lampshades by creating a repeating linocut pattern. You’ll learn how to design and carve your own linocut block, inspired by the natural curves and textures of the environment around you. This custom motif repeated throughout your printmaking process, ultimately defining the visual identity of your lampshade.
Week five — Print & lampshade crafting
Week five brings your printmaking skills into play. You’ll apply your repeat lino-cut pattern to fabric using established printmaking techniques. Once the pattern is set, you’ll transform the printed textile into a custom lampshade that perfectly complements your painted lamp base.
Week six — Finishing & presentation
In the final session, you’ll make the finishing touches to your lamp, ensuring every detail reflects your creative vision. The workshop concludes with a presentation of your completed work, celebrating the unique piece you’ve crafted over the course of the sessions.
