Storytelling through

Photopolymer Printmaking

Wild Water, 2020 by Rebecca Holmes

Course Overview

This six–week after–school course is for ages 11 and over. In this playful, hands–on journey, participants will explore how stories can be told through image–making, using photopolymer printmaking as the core medium. Drawing inspiration from literature, theatre design and contemporary illustration, students will build characters, design stage–like sets, and translate their visual narratives into unique photopolymer prints.

By the end of the course, each participant will have created and printed their own story–inspired photopolymer plate, while also gaining experience in photomontage, collage, drawing and chine–collé.

Week–by–week

Week 1 — Introducing photopolymer & story inspiration

We begin with an introduction to photopolymer printmaking and its versatility. After reading aloud from a short story, participants highlight and select a favourite passage. They then create simple standing characters through photomontage, ready to inhabit their chosen scene.

Week 2 — Stage design and atmosphere

Through a short presentation on theatre designer Josef Svoboda, students consider how light, mood and composition tell a story. They then design their own two–dimensional stage sets in photomontage, imagining the environments in which their characters will act.

Week 3 — Drawing the scene

Using their stage sets and characters, students explore how arrangement and lighting can transform atmosphere. Each creates an expressive charcoal drawing of their scene, setting the foundation for the mixed–media work to come.

Week 4 — From drawing to collage: Beatrice Alemagna

This session introduces the work of illustrator Beatrice Alemagna. Inspired by her blend of drawing and collage, participants rework their drawings, integrating photomontage elements to enrich narrative impact. By the end of this session, each has a completed image ready to transfer to photopolymer.

Week 5 — Exposing the plate

Students are guided step–by–step through transferring their collage–drawing study onto a light–sensitive photopolymer plate. They experience the magic of exposure and development and prepare their plate for printing.

Week 6 — Printing & sharing

The final session is devoted to inking, wiping, and pulling prints from their photopolymer plates. Participants also try chine–collé to add layered texture and colour. We close with a group sharing and reflection, celebrating each student’s unique approach to visual storytelling.
