Myths in Line and Print

Course overview

This four-week course introduces young artists to Greek myth through expressive drawing and experimental printmaking, using the story of Pegasus as a shared narrative thread.

Students begin by exploring the work of British artist Eska Marsh, whose bold monochromatic drypoint and carborundum prints emphasise tone, texture, and silhouette. Inspired by this approach, participants develop charcoal drawings into collagraph, monoprint, and chine-collé prints, discovering how images transform across techniques.

The course encourages experimentation, visual storytelling, and confidence in expressive mark-making, culminating in a collection of layered, tactile artworks.

Week one — Drawing the Myths: Movement, Story, Form

Technique: Observational charcoal drawing from dramatically lit horse figurines.

Activity: Students are introduced to the bold and poetic print works of Eska Marsh and hear the Pegasus myth. Using figurines, they explore atmosphere through focussing on shadow, light and gesture through loose charcoal drawings.

Focus: Building confidence in expressive mark-making and learning to translate myth into visual form.

Outcome: A series of dynamic charcoal sketches forming the foundation for later printmaking.

Week two — Chine-collé & Collagraph

Technique: Collagraph printmaking using carborundum

Activity: Using carborundum and inspired by their charcoal studies, participants create a textured ‘painting’ from their Pegasus charcoal studies onto aluminium plates. Drypoint etching lines are also incorporated into this process. Symbolic motifs in tissue paper—wings, hooves, manes—are carefully composed for chine-collé. Plates are inked, wiped, and printed, revealing richly layered surfaces and expressive marks.

Focus: Exploring texture, tone, line, layering, and contrast while discovering how relief, and intaglio approaches can merge within printmaking.

Outcome: Bold, tactile horse prints with deep tonal variation, textured surfaces, and symbolic chine-collé elements embedded into the final image.

Week Three — Drawing into Print

Technique: Monoprinting from charcoal drawings

Activity: Using their expressive charcoal studies as a starting point once again, participants continue exploring line, tone, and movement through the simple yet beautiful process of monoprinting, discovering how drawn marks can shift and transform through print.

Focus: Translating drawing into print while embracing spontaneity, texture, and the unique, unrepeatable nature of monoprints.

Outcome: A series of one-of-a-kind monoprints that capture movement and atmosphere, helping participants understand how printed images can evolve from drawn beginnings.

Week four — Stencils & Storytelling

Technique: Chine-collé transfer onto damp cotton paper.

Activity: Students cut around their Pegasus inspired monoprints, glue them with wheat paste, and transfer them onto cotton based paper using the press. The session closes with a group sharing of work.

Focus: Bringing together drawing, collage, and printmaking into a final layered and embossed piece, while reflecting on process.

Outcome: Each child leaves with a collection of finished monoprints, chine-collé and collagraphed Pegasus inspired prints and a deeper appreciation of myth-inspired visual storytelling.
